Why this matters
Residents’ safety concerns around this stretch of bush go back years. A Tygerburger article from 27 July 2016, “Robberies rile residents,” reported on a spate of muggings and attacks at the Riet Street foot bridge into Penhill Estate — roughly one incident a month at the time — with residents (including Paul Clark and Dieter Heinze) pointing reporters to the overgrown bush along the route as cover used by attackers. Clearing exactly that kind of dense vegetation is part of what this operation is addressing.
As part of PHORA’s ongoing efforts to keep the estate and its surrounding green spaces safe, well-maintained and secure, law enforcement and community safety officers joined a bush-clearing operation along the reserve. The exercise focused on clearing overgrown bush and removing illegal structures and dumped materials that had accumulated in the dense vegetation — work that helps reduce fire risk, deter illegal occupation, and keep the natural areas around Penhill accessible and safe for residents.
PHORA continues to work with local law enforcement on initiatives like this one, and will keep residents updated as further clean-up and safety operations are scheduled.
